Despite the current international economic situation, Mexico is expanding its port capacity. The following is an excerpt from the electronic magazine NAFTA Works (a monthly magazine about NAFTA and related issues). “In the current economic context of globalization, ports are key elements in the economic politics to increase Mexico’s competitiveness. Ports promote a more efficient transportation in the country, they promote commerce growth and reduce traffic in the main routes while promoting regional development.
The Mexican government has carried out an ambitious investment plan to improve the infrastructure through the National Infrastructure Plan 2007-2012. The plan contemplates investments of more than six billion for the expansion and modernization of charger sea capacity and passenger capacity in the country. The objectives includes: developing five ports, expand or modernize twenty two existing ports and build thirteen cruise docks...
As a result an increase in the current capacity of managing containers from four to seven TEUS is expected as well as improving the management and efficacy of operations with specialized containers from 68 to 75 containers per hour.
